Ministry of Health - Dowa District

In 2005 the Ministry of Health of Malawi, ordered ten eRanger Ambulances based on the findings of the Safe Motherhood Project Report.

These eRanger Ambulances were placed in the Dowa district and used to transport expectant mothers and the sick and injured to the District Hospital from outlying rural areas. With each rural health clinic having access to an eRanger ambulance and two trained women drivers, complete coverage of the district has been achieved.

This project has verified the those positive findings highlighted in the Safe Motherhood Report. The effectiveness and operational value of the eRanger Ambulance has been tested and found beneficial.

The Malawi Ministry of Health have confirmed an order for 54 eRanger Ambulances (May 2006). This order is destined to supplement the earlier order of 16 that went into separate pilot projects in the Dowa Region of Malawi.

The success of the initial deployments was so encouraging that the order of a further 54 units was quickly established and following a tender operation that revealed no suitable alternatives, was confirmed earlier this month. All the units are expected to be on location by the end of August 2006.

This project covers not just the delivery of the eRanger Ambulance units but also the technical training of the maintenance staff and the training of the team of riders who will operate the vehicles on location at rural clinics.
