CPAR Purongo Health Centre

Serving a significant settled IDP population, staff at Purongo aim to provide general care as well as sexual and reproductive services in a difficult context compounded by limited human resources, poor road infrastructure connecting the centre to higher level services at Anaka and deficiencies in reliable, accessible transport.

It is strongly believed that the incorporation of the eRanger Ambulance will strengthen the health centre's referral system between Purongo and Anaka, especially for emergency maternal referrals which remain a critical influence on maternal mortality rates.

CPAR will cascade the driver and maintenance training received in Munyonyo to local drivers whilst also incorporating information about the eRanger Ambulance into their IEC activities.

CPAR will also encourage voluntary community health workers and Music, Dance and Drama groups to include the new service into their educational and positive health-seeking behaviour work among the local population.

Marie Stopes Uganda have committed to fund fuel, maintenance and servicing requirements for the sustainable operation of the eRanger Ambulance for 4 years.

An innovative and appropriate technology for a resource limited setting that will go a long way to boost Maternal and New Born Health Care in rural Health Units.

Dr. Keith Mugarura,
National Medical Coordinator, CPAR Uganda

A photo diary

This is a photo diary of the CPAR eRanger Ambulance based at Purongo HC III.

"A young mother attending to her one day old baby in the maternity ward of Purongo HC III, the RAISE project site where basic EmOC is being offered. This is one of the few mothers enjoying the fruit of attending ANC fully; both the mother and baby are in good condition. Before the implementation of RAISE project, such mothers would opt for the TBAs where they risk getting various obstetric complications."
