The Southern Ethiopia - Gwent Health Link is a health partnership that focuses on training frontline health professionals in Southern Ethiopia. Over the past 2 years it has introduced 4 eRanger Motorcycle Ambulances to clinics it supports.
Here is just one story to illustrate the success so far.
Metasebia writes: "Tayech Ermias is a 25 year old primigravida. She lives 5km away from Shone health centre. She knew that last year one woman near her home died in labour. The woman could not get to the health center in time because of lack of transport. After many long hours in labour by the time her family could bring her to the health center she had already passed away."
"Tayech heard about the motorbike ambulance during her antenatal check up. When she went to labour around 4:00pm her family called to Eshetu, the motorbike ambulance driver, who came within 20 minutes and brought her to the health center. Dawit, the midwife (trained by the link in October 2009) helped her to give birth around 6:00pm to a 3kg healthy baby boy. She stayed at the health center for 3 hours.
During these 5 hours the driver waited for her to take her back to her home. She is very happy with whole service and was keen to come back to the health centre to tell her story."
We wish the Southern Ethiopia - Gwent Health Link - Happy 10th birthday.

"Transport in Rural Sub Saharan Africa has always been an issue that inhibits health services, development programmes and financial development. The dispersal of rural populations combined with poor road infrastructure and a lack of appropriate local services has created an inequality of wealth and wellbeing. The real challenge is to get that final transport stage in place from services to rural populations. The eRanger vehicles were designed to provide appropriate, low-cost transport capacity to cover the final link in the transport chain to the front door of rural communities. The design is based on the principle of using a vehicle that is simple, capable and cost effective"
